United Robotics Group Opens Robotics Training Center in Gelsenkirchen in the Heart of a Former Hospital

United Robotics Group is opening a robotics training and development center in Gelsenkirchen on 400 m² of a former intensive care unit – as part of the technology partnership with KERN.

Stuhr, Germany, August 6, 2026 — United Robotics Group (URG), a leading provider of AI-powered robotics solutions for the healthcare and service sectors, is opening a new site in Gelsenkirchen. As part of a technology partnership with KERN Katholische Einrichtungen Ruhrgebiet Nord GmbH, URG is moving into premises in the former St. Josef Hospital Gelsenkirchen, where KERN now operates the St. Josef Health Center. The new site will serve as a robotics training and development center.

"This opening enables us to prepare our robotics solutions specifically for deployment in hospitals and care facilities – globally," explains Wassim Saeidi, Founder and CEO of United Robotics Group. "The St. Josef Health Center offers an ideal infrastructure that comes very close to real everyday clinical life."

From Intensive Care Unit to Innovation Center

The premises, covering around 400 square meters, are located in the former emergency and intensive care ward. They are now being converted into a robotics training center where URG robots can be demonstrated, trained and configured under real clinical and care conditions.

"Our robots are meant to make everyday life easier for healthcare workers. That is why we rigorously validate our solutions and develop them further to meet real-world requirements. This is the place we are creating for exactly that," says Kerstin Wagner, Co-CEO and COO of United Robotics Group.

Two Specialized Training Rooms for Realistic Application Scenarios

The center features two demonstration and training rooms:

Clinic & Laboratory Demo Environment: A room that authentically replicates a clinical laboratory and hospital environment. Here, URG robots can be demonstrated, tested and further developed under realistic conditions – from sample logistics to supporting clinical processes.

Care & Supply Demo Environment: A flexibly configurable room that can be used both as a patient room with a hospital bed and as a care or residential environment – equipped with a bed, armchair, table and other practical furnishings. This room enables realistic simulation of various application scenarios in healthcare and nursing care.

A special feature: an electric double swing hospital door has been preserved in the corridor of the former hospital building. It allows the demonstration of typical use cases such as robots autonomously passing through doors and automated bed transport – tasks that are relevant every day in hospital operations.

Four Robotics Systems in Training

Four URG robotics systems will be trained and further developed at the new Gelsenkirchen site:

uMe – URG's humanoid assistance and communication robot, designed for human-centered environments in nursing, hospitals and care settings. uMe relies on voice-based interaction, sensor-based perception and pre-programmed movement sequences to relieve caregivers and accompany people in need of care in their everyday lives.

uLab Mobile – the mobile, autonomous service robot for supporting tasks in clinical laboratories, where it handles sample processing, device loading and transport tasks around the clock – and is now being further developed for additional tasks in clinical environments.

uLog – the autonomous logistics system for recurring transport tasks in hospitals and care facilities, relieving skilled staff of time-consuming in-house transport of supplies, laundry and other goods.

uServe – a versatile service robot for human-centered environments such as healthcare. It is equipped with advanced navigation and interaction systems that enable it to autonomously handle tasks such as delivering medical supplies, guiding visitors and providing key information.

All URG robotics systems are integrated into the AI-based software platform uGo+, developed jointly with the Fraunhofer Institute, which enables intelligent fleet management and workflow orchestration of URG robots.
