Substations and technical installations are inspected on a schedule. Between two inspections there is time — and in that time everything happens that later counts as a sudden failure.

A mobile inspection robot drives the route as often as it makes sense: with camera and thermal imaging, always from the same angle, always comparable. Whatever changes stands out, because there is a previous state to compare against.

This does not replace your specialist. It makes sure they go out when there is something to see — and not because the calendar says so.

Anyone searching for inspection robotics for substations finds trade articles about pilot projects. What is almost completely missing are manufacturer pages that say which scope of functions is dependable today. That is uncomfortable for operators who have to make an investment decision.

Our answer: an honest classification in three levels – and a conversation in which we name the limits before the quotation, not after it.

Three configuration levels, honestly separated

  • Remote operation and development: teleoperated use, open interfaces, raw sensor data access. For trials, research and your own development.
  • Assisted autonomy: mapping and waypoint routes on enclosed areas, repeatable approach to defined measuring points, automatic docking, day/night camera and thermal imaging, mission reports. The typical first productive step.
  • Full autonomy with inspection payload: 3D LiDAR, high-resolution zoom camera, radiometric thermal imaging, anomaly detection against the normal state, point clouds and trend analysis. The final configuration level.

What counts beyond the IP rating

  • Protection rating of the system, not just the housing – connectors, charging contacts, charging station, LiDAR and camera dome considered individually
  • Operating temperature with honest limits, battery performance in frost stated separately
  • Condensation at the cold/warm transition, pressure equalisation instead of fully sealed
  • Salt spray to ISO 9227 for coastal and port sites
  • Vibration and shock on gravel, grating and kerb edges
  • Explosion protection as an exclusion criterion, clarified before the quotation

Your robot. Your data.

A robot working in your organisation sees and hears things that are nobody’s business outside it. That is why the AI processing runs on the device and not in someone else’s cloud. A permanent internet connection is not required for operation — closed hospital, care and laboratory networks are possible. What is created with you stays with you: you decide on storage, analysis and deletion. Through uGo+ you define who may start which tasks, and mission reports are auditable — the basis for a data protection impact assessment, for the works council and for the authorities.

Buy or rent: Robot-as-a-Service

You can buy or rent as Robot-as-a-Service. With rental you pay a recurring monthly rate covering hardware, software maintenance and service together — from the operating budget instead of the capital budget. This is the usual route for a pilot and for a step-by-step rollout across several sites.

An honest note: rental is not automatically cheaper than purchase — it shifts risk and timing. What adds up for your organisation depends on term, quantity, funding options and budget structure. We work through that openly with you in the first conversation instead of selling you a model. We do not publish prices, because configuration and integration scope decide the outcome — a figure without that context would be misleading.

What can an inspection robot do in a substation today?

Recurring rounds on enclosed, mapped areas with image and thermal capture at defined measuring points, documented and comparable over time. Fully autonomous inspection of unknown sites is roadmap.

Which protection rating is needed for outdoor use?

For outdoor installations the combination of IP66 and IP67 is the sensible standard: strong water jets and temporary immersion. IP69K comes from high-pressure hot-water cleaning in the food industry and is the wrong class for outdoor use.

Does the protection rating apply to the whole system?

No, and that is the point that often gets lost in data sheets: a system is only as sealed as its weakest part. Connectors, charging contacts, charging station, LiDAR housing and camera dome must be considered individually.

Is explosion protection possible?

In refineries and gas plants there are zones for which a normal robot is not approved. We clarify that before the quotation, not after it.

When is uRun available in which configuration level?

The platform is under continued development; our own model follows. What can be committed to in your project is fixed bindingly in the quotation – we do not sell a roadmap as the present.
